Here are some of my go-to kit essentials:
1. Loreal Liquid to Powder Foundation
This is such an under-rated foundation. It works well, and is a great way to thin out a cream foundation without losing coverage. There is a slight SPF, so if you're doing makeup for a photoshoot you might want to skip this foundation, but for any other occasion it's great.
2. Smashbox Pore Refining Primer
I spoke about this in my last blog post, but it really is a miracle product. It keeps the skin matte all day, and fills in pores to create a flawless base for foundation.
3. Temptu Concealer Wheel
Having a makeup kit is all about consolidation and efficient packing. That's when palettes become your best friend. I like the Temptu Concealer Wheel because it's a truly neutral, and has a nice range of colors.
4. Ben Nye Rainbow Color Wheel
When you first look at it, you might be thinking, "Okay, well, I don't plan on getting into face paints... when am I going to use this?" This wheel is the most essential. You can make any color under the sun with this wheel and it's a really great way to get practice mixing colors. Make sure you also have a cream color in plain white, so you can make a color lighter if needed.
5. Clear Gloss
Once you apply the lip color, all you have to do is add clear gloss on top. You can keep a couple other colored glosses, but if you have a smaller budget, just a clear gloss will do the trick.
It feels like this year we went straight from winter to summer. Here are a couple of things you can do to protect your skin and keep your makeup lasting all day.
1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
This should be something you do already, but it will really help your skin through the day if you start off by moisturizing your face and neck. Ideally, you should have a thicker moisturizer for winter time and a lighter moisturizer for summertime. For summer time I like Trader Joe's Antioxidant Moisturizer.
2. SPF 1,000,000
Okay, not really, but you do want to make sure that either your moisturizer or foundation has a decent SPF. If you're going to be out in the sun you want to make sure that you have long-lasting face/neck/whole body protection.
The next step is just as crucial as the last two. Make sure that you have a primer that works for your specific skin type. I've found that for oily skin the Smashbox Pore Minimizing Primer works amaaaaazingly. For dry skin, I suggest the Smashbox Hydrating Primer.
4. Less is more.
Finally, remember that the biggest trick to long-lasting makeup in the summer heat is to keep it simple. The more stuff you put on your face, the more likely it's going to cake and slip. Stick to waterproof eyeliners/mascaras and thin liquid foundations or even just fuller-coverage powders.
