I've been asked a few times over the course of building City Headshots how we are able to work with so many people each day and still give them the best possible quality for their headshots.
You'll often hear from other photographers who don't have many clients that you shouldn't shoot with a company that works with a lot of people. They say it's better to work with a photographer who only shoots one person per day (and then they tend to change their story once they start booking up and are no longer struggling to find clients).
You'll hear that the photographer who only shoots one person each day is going to spend more time with you to give you more care and attention to detail. It is true that any photographer who shoots more than 7 shoots per day is likely going to be tired and might not be able to coax the best expressions out of you.
However, it's important to note that we have three photographers working here each day. So each photographer only shoots between two and four shoots per day on average, meaning they have plenty of energy for everyone.
Second, shooting multiple people each day keeps us on top of our game so we keep practicing our techniques and getting better. If you want to see some examples of our work, check out The Portfolio.
In general, we find that from minutes 15 to 45 is when most people are at their absolute best in their energy and comfort level on-camera. Shoots lasting longer than an hour and a half tend to not be as effective because the client gets tired.
Because we hone in so specifically on expression and can bring out exactly what you need right away, there is no need to spend hours shooting pictures. Less-experienced photographers will shoot for many hours and give minimal direction to their clients, either because they don't know the fundamentals of directing for expression, or they don't feel comfortable with those subtleties. They'll "Spray and Pray" hoping that you can find some good shots amidst 500 or more pictures.
Our aim at City Headshots is to keep headshots affordable for everyone by shooting with more people for a lower rate, but to continue to hire more photographers so none of us is overworked and we can always provide the absolute best quality to each client we shoot. We focus on quality over quantity, and that is why we are the top Yelp-rated headshot studio in all of New York.
