“I want to do my shoot outside… but what if it rains?” Never fear, City Headshots is here! Many people are surprised to find out that we will shoot in any weather. Yup, that’s right. Sunny days, cloudy, rain and crazy blizzard-like snow. But, that’s only if you’re up to it! We’ve had some real troopers walk through our door, adamant to get some shots done outside. Here’s a story about one of our favorite “weather-warriors.”
Picture this: it’s the middle of January in New York City. In their head, a tourist might see picturesque Rockefeller center, or maybe beautiful snow laden trees in Central Park. A New York native imagines Michelin-man looking pedestrians bundled in about 15 layers of clothing, trudging through the mix of fresh snow falling to the ground and the grayish snow-sludge found along the sidewalks and streets. Beautiful!
On this particular day in January, we had a lovely high-energy, pep-in-her-step actress doing an Essential Shoot. We started the shoot off strong with some white background commercial shots, with her favorite playlist going in the background. She decided that for one of her looks she’d like to go outside. Martin replies, “I think it’s snowing pretty hard out there… We can totally do shots outside, as long as you’re okay with that.” and with the motto “A little snow never hurt anybody,” we went outside.
It was snowing so hard it looked like there was a white filter over everything I was looking at. We got set up underneath some scaffolding, and got to shooting. The shots were coming out great, but the actress looked at us and paused. “…Can you get some shots of me playing in the snow?” Although totally different from what we normally do, we were really excited to see what we could get. With that, she put on her snow hat and her mittens and picked up two big handfuls of snow. “You ready?” she asked.
“And… Action! Go!”
We got a ton of awesome pictures of her throwing snow up in the air and blowing it to the camera from the palm of her hand, looking like a model straight out of a Gap ad. That’s one of my favorite parts about working here - you never know who will walk through the door and the impromptu ideas that we will come up with during a shoot. That shoot was definitely one for the books!
