The Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival kicks off its 15th year tonight so I thought I would pull out some dusty old photos from my trip last summer and chat about my favorite things to shoot at festivals!
Now I wasn't on assignment so I didn't have a press pass to bring in pro gear, I was mostly there to get in some good dancing with the Alabama Shakes. And while I love that Marcus Haney is able to pull off sneaking into press pits, I figured just finding a smaller camera would be easier.
Gear wise, I wanted something that would be small enough to not attract attention, but would function like a manual DSLR, so I took a look at the Canon G7x. If you like cameras and you haven't checked this guy out, I would definitely recommend it. I could shoot in full manual mode wide open (to an f/1.8) on this tiny little point and shoot! Too cool. It also let me adjust to whatever shutter speed I wanted, meaning I could get down with some sweet, sweet night shots.
When it comes to shooting at festivals for some personal photos, I'm all about the atmosphere. I'll let the guys with the press passes shoot the artists, I want to hang with the poi spinners at DeadMau5.
So if you're going to a festival this season, have a fabulous time! Bring a camera and share some shots with us!
Until next year, Bonnaroovians.
