Remember, the key to marketing anything (including yourself) is to give people what they want. You have to make people like you by giving them things they want for free. Find a group of starving people and then feed them what they want!
If you just start posting all of your projects online, and the projects have no relation to each other except for you being in them, you won't get any followers. You have to find out what your fans want and give them more of it.
Use social media sites to categorize your contacts.
Search their interests and favorite movies to get an idea of who likes horror films, who likes action films, etc. (you can even ask people what they like). Then group them up and email them whenever you have a new film that is that type of genre.
Now, of course by "contact" on Facebook and other social media sites I don't mean your closest friends. I mean your acquaintances. Your best friends will follow you whenever. Your acquaintances and Facebook friends that you don't really know that well are the hard ones to make into fans.
Those people don't want to be bombarded by emails all the time saying you're in a new movie. They only want things that interest them. If you give them too many films they don't like, they will start ignoring your emails altogether.
Step 1 towards building fans is give them what they want, no more. And you should be able to start with people on Facebook.
I will explain more tomorrow.
