I never tell people this, but to be able to get good headshots you need a good smile. If you don't know how to smile, ask people for help. Practice laughing in the mirror and look at it. Laughing will give you true smiles if you can't naturally smile.
Remember that headshots shouldn't look forced. If you start going down that road you're headed the wrong way. I can't stress this enough. Don't smirk or try to smile if the smile is not a happy one.
Theatrical headshots might not necessarily need smiles, but those aren't the kind I'm talking about here. I'm speaking of a good old fashioned smiling picture, where you are being yourself in the headshot. These are called commercial headshots. To get those great smiles in commercial headshots, you must be relaxed, happy, and having a good time. Just be natural!
