Do you want to know what poses are the best for actors when doing headshots? At this point in time, I have to say that controlling where the actor stands is something that takes away from the organic feel of the headshot.
As a film director, organic acting is the most realistic acting you can have. You want your actor to really be in the moment when shooting a film. Giving too much direction and trying to control every aspect of the performance will make it look less realistic. Doing a stage play is so much different because if your emotions are subtle then audience won't feel involved (since they are so far away). With closeups on film and camera, it's different:
Any amount of overacting will be noticeable on film in a closeup shot.
What are headshots? Closeup shots. Forcing the actor into weird poses will make them feel uncomfortable and will make the headshot not look organic and natural.
The skill of the professional headshot photographer is not only to put the actor into a pose that looks good on camera, but to do it while also keeping the actor looking and feeling natural. It's something that comes with time.
But as the actor, your responsibility is to should make sure that your headshot photographer can do this. Don't hire him or her if they can't.
