This is so important to do if you are going to self-promote. Remember that self-promotion is the second most important thing right after craft if you are an actor, so you always have to be asking the question: "What's in it for them?"
When asking this, you should be thinking what is in it for the person you are trying to self-promote to. The thing to know is that people don't do things without thinking about what is in it for themselves. So you should be keeping this in mind when designing an advertising strategy for yourself and your work.
Let's take an example: you want a bunch of people to come to the show you're putting on at your theater company. How do you get them to come?
Well what's in it for them? If you say a great show, well that's good and all, but only for the people who really want a good show right now. Remember that marketing yourself means finding people who want what you have. Then you give it to them. Finding a ton of people and trying to market a show that they don't necessarily want to see won't work unless you give them something else too.
Give the people who come to your show something else too! Try to think of something that makes it an exclusive event and that if they go they get special access to something that no one else has, that they might want. Remember that the more things you offer with your show will increase the amount of people who will be interested because maybe the person might not be inerested in the show, but they will be interested in the other offers that are with it.
The key to effective marketing is always to ask what's in it for them. Think about what your target audience wants, or what you can add to the offer that will make the offer much more valuable to them.
