What they didn't teach you in acting school

$24.95

Get Cast is a book written to teach up and coming actors how to promote themselves and find paid jobs in the tumultuous world of show biz. Martin has interviewed successful actors, agents, managers, and casting directors and has put together a book designed to put you ahead of 95% of other actors out there who opt to learn these strategies the long and slow way.

Most actors have no idea how to market themselves

Most actors ignore the reality of finance and finding paid work until it's too late and they are forced to give up on their dreams and get a "real job." The reality of finance is as follows:

  • The unemployment rate for actors typically hovers around 87%, which means most actors are only emplpyed for 13% of the year, according to Actor's Equity Association.

  • Actors typically borrow between $27,000 and $114,000 to pay for their formal education, according to FinAid.org.

  • Actors pay union fees in excess of $3,000, lose between 10% and 30% in fees to agents and managers, and with the advent of Obamacare, are fined $6,000 per year if they don't have health coverage.

Adding it up

If we took all the above numbers and combine them together:

The average graduating actor will hold $70,500 in debt. If they are employed for only 13% of every year, and earn the average actor's salary of $33.82 per hour (according to the BLS), and have to deal with the aformentioned expenses, we can expect the following:

Average income from acting = $8,793.20 per year.
Subtract 15% on average to pay an agent or manager = $7,474.22
Subtrack 10% taxes, assuming lowest bracket = $6,726.80
Penalty for no health insurance = $6,000 per year.

For those who don't market themselves effectively:
Most actors make on average $726.80 per year.
And that's before rent, food, gas, and other expenses, like Union dues, and education debt/interest.

Acting is about more than just headshots and Auditions.

If you want to be a successful actor, you need to apply all the following strategies:

  1. Know the basics. Get your headshot, resume, and business cards in order.
  2. Create marketing materials. Design a great website and compelling demo reel (even if you're a stage actor!).
  3. Change your thinking. Begin looking at yourself as a freelance service provider instead of an artist.
  4. Learn the business. Understand the ins and outs of the industry, from audition protocol to union dues.
  5. Find your brand. Know the difference between your type and your archetype, and how to apply both of them to your marketing efforts.
  6. Pay your bills. Earn supplemental income at an extremely high hourly rate to give yourself more free time to pursue acting.
  7. Network. Manage your reputation online and offline to increase positive word of mouth.
  8. Find an agent. Start getting calls asking for you to audition for projects instead of just applying online for jobs.
  9. Build a following. Use email lists and social media to grow your fan base to increase your chance of landing the high paid roles.
  10. Learn to love criticism. Master your subconscious mind to take control of the thoughts that might be stopping you from taking action.

Is this book worth it?

That's completely for you to decide, but if you divide the cost of this book up, you'll probably just have to skip about 10 Starbucks drinks for it.

I don't know if you're interested in learning all these marketing strategies but if you are, here are some of the benefits:

  1. Complete content. This book covers all of the aforementioned topics in detail with examples and instructions.
  2. My personal backing. I offer a 100% guarantee. If you're not completely happy with what you learn in this book, I'll refund you the total cost. My word is my bond. That's why we have so many five star Yelp reviews.
  3. There are no other books on the market like it. This is the first time a book has taken marketing and business building strategies, and tailored them specifically for aspiring actors.
  4. Step by step format. Because of the simple step by step format, you'll learn how to apply strategic thinking to your marketing so you find consistent work. The book is easy to follow and you can read and focus on one step each day.
  5. It's in my best interest that this book helps you succeed. If you make money using the steps in this book, I also win because you'll have the extra income to take a look at some of my more in-depth material, such as the Get Cast™ class program and audiobooks, along with one on one coaching. Perhaps we may even work together on your next headshot!

A Little About The Author

PictureMartin Bentsen, 2011 Honors Graduate, NYU Tisch School of the Arts
Martin Bentsen, writer of Get Cast, has spoken numerous times at New York University, has run educational seminars at Actor's Connection on branding and marketing strategies for performers, and currently runs a class called Get Cast™, which focuses on marketing and audition tactics actors can use to find more consistent work. He is a member of both the National Association of Sales Professionals and Sales & Marketing Executives International, two highly acclaimed marketing organizations in the United States.

Martin graduated in 2011 with honors from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts with a focus on directing and in 2010, he founded City Headshots®, which, according to Yelp, is ranked the top headshot studio in all of New York City. City Headshots® currently employs seven people and has locations in New York, Denver, and Philadelphia. Some of City Headshots’ repeat clients include well known companies such as LinkedIn Corp and American Express, and some of its photos have been featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

As a filmmaker who has written four features and produced and cast two of them, Martin not only understands the intricacies of marketing and finding an audience, but also what it takes for actors to successfully navigate the casting world while making themselves memorable. He coaches actors one-on-one with their branding, marketing, and business strategies, and in how they conduct themselves during the actual audition.
Martin’s long term goal is to connect business coaches with actors across the country and help permanently end the cliche of The Starving Artist.
