If your headshot photographer doesn't know very much about headshots, he or she will not know how to use the environment to the advantage of the headshot client (you).
Environment can tell you so much about the character. Of course, headshots should not be emphasizing the environment because the point of them is to emphasize the face and head.
The background color and choice of texture for the background can bring out and be used to emphasize certain portions of the face or to bring out the character more.
Let's think of an example...
Say I was shooting a guy doing a criminal look. He wants to look like a thug, and so is wearing a hoody in the shot (down of course... You can't have something on the head and covering the hair). I can choose to shoot him with a pale blueish background or to shoot him against a deep red, rusty colored background. Which headshot do you think will be more effective to bring out his character? The rusty color.
Make sure your photographer is willing and able to shoot different backgrounds that will compliment your character, because using the environment is so important.
Ask me if you have any other questions about headshots, I enjoy answering them for you.
